- Marian Studenič: 1G, 3A 17:09 TOI
- Sparta were guilty of several unforced errors
- Färjestad secure four-goal aggregate advantage
A textbook performance in the final period resulted in Färjestad Karlstad fashioning their second straight six-goal game as they downed Sparta Prague by a final of 6-2 and now hold a four-goal aggregate advantage heading into their Return Game next week in this Champions Hockey League Semi-Finals series.
Färjestad had their legs going early as Viktor Lodin's deflection from the slot got the Swedes on the board just one and a half minutes into the game. Marcus Westfält sent the puck low-to-high where Magnus Nygren wristed it towards the net as Lodin got his stick on it to put it past Josef Kořenář and take the advantage.
A few minutes later, however, Sparta's powerplay capitalised on its debut as Jani Lajunen was able to secure the equaliser with a rebound tally. Maxime Lagacé made the initial save on Valtteri Kemiläinen's snapshot, but Lajunen found the loose puck and swatted it behind the netminder's right pad to level things at 1-1.
Then with less than four minutes in the opening frame, it was the Swedish side's leading scorer cementing his fifth goal and 15th point of the campaign as Oskar Steen cruised to the top of the crease where he received a nifty behind-the-net pass from Joel Kellman which he wasted no time in depositing into the back of the net to reclaim Färjestad's one-goal edge.
In the second, it was 22-year-old Alexander Ljungkrantz securing his second CHL goal when he finished off a 2-on-1 opportunity to give his side a two-goal cushion six minutes into the middle frame. The play began when Lucas Forsell scooped up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated down the far side, and slid the puck between the legs of a Sparta defender and onto the tape of Ljungkrantz who roofed it stick side.
45 seconds into the final stanza, sloppy play from Sparta resulted in Färjestad extending their lead once again when Marian Studenič stole the puck, powered his way down the middle and tucked the puck past the near post to make it 4-1 on aggregate.
More undisciplined play from the Czechs led to another tally for the Swedes as an unforced turnover gave the puck to Studenič who slid it to Steen as the forward put it through the wickets of the Czech netminder to put his team up by four on aggregate at 49:16.
The hosts would find some life moments later when Miroslav Forman netted his first of the season to bring the goal gap to within three, but 11 seconds later, it was Färjestad lighting the lamp a sixth time courtesy of Joel Nyström's tally.
With under a minute to go in regulation, Sparta went on the powerplay but failed to convert allowing the Swedes to maintain their comfortable position heading into next week's all-important Return Game.
