- Munich edge it in OT
- Frederik Tiffels scores ninth goal of CHL campaign
- Justin Schütz snatches GWG
After being held 2-2 in the first game, Red Bull Munich needed overtime to eventually see off Lukko Rauma as Frederik Tiffels and Justin Schütz fired them into the Semi-Finals.
Munich found themselves unable to build on any momentum gained from last week’s third period rally, as the opening stanza remained scoreless, passing without incident. Lukko, able to name a more experienced line-up than the youthful team that competed so well in the first game, tested Dannyaus den Birken’s resolve early on with some attempts through traffic, as they outshot their hosts 9-6 in the first frame.
The German’s attempted to pick up the tempo for the second period for which they were almost rewarded when Austin Ortega’s wrister sprung off the crossbar and Philip Gogulla also went close.
It took until almost the 27th minute for the game’s first penalty to be called with Munich going on a fruitless powerplay after Matthew Abt was called for roughing. Those missed chances would prove costly when the game got the goal it so sorely needed. Sebastian Repo curled into the slot and that left des Birken with little chance to salvage anything on it as it went through a crowd, for Lukko to gain a 3-2 aggregate lead on 32:31.
After spurning the chance to respond with a brief five-on-three powerplay, Tiffels sparked Munich’s offence into life on 38:24 with a true highlight-reel goal to tie the game going into the third period. Tiffel oozed class as he sped through the neutral zone, cut into the centre before letting rip with a shot that flew in under the bar to continue his impressive CHL campaign that has seen him score eight goals.
Deadlocked over two-games heading into the third period, Ortega briefly thought he had put Munich in front but a review stuck with the initial call that the puck had not crossed the line and Tiffels’ speed again terrorised Lukko as he went through on goal, attempting to pull a forehand-backhand move before being hooked to earn Munich their fourth powerplay of the night.
That man advantage was quickly negated with Trevor Parkes getting called for high-sticking but two sides continued to be inseparable to take the tie into a 10-minute three-on-three overtime period.
Schütz finally settled the tie 2:25 into the overtime period after his initial shot bounced off Lassi Lehtinen and as Lukko frantically tried to clear, Schütz jammed in the rebound.
