- Mannheim field a heavily depleted roster of 16
- Frölunda's Elmer Söderblom nets a duo for the hosts
- Big saves by Mannheim's Dennis Endras in the second keeps the score tight
With an outstanding first leg game on the road, Frölunda Gothenburg were in a very comfortable position heading into the game, but their play was anything but relaxed. The pedal was was to the metal, and Elmer Söderblom nearly kicked off the festivities early after he cut in toward the net, pulling the puck up high on Adler Mannheim netminder Dennis Endras.
A chip through the neutral zone, saw the 20-year-old Swede with a second chance minutes later, which he buried home. Endras seemed to get a piece of the shot, but the puck somehow trickled over the line making it 1-0 for the hosts.
Mannheim managed a handful of good shots during the second period, including a great oppotunity by Ralf Rollinger which went into the pads of Nicklas Rubin. Seconds later it was 2-0 thanks to a quick pass from blueliner Christian Folin, to Simon Edvinsson, who wasted no time hitting the tape of Johan Sundstrom who was planted net-front.
Despite the onslaught by Frölunda, Endras was outstanding foiling several great efforts by the Swedish side, and keeping the Germans in the game.
With less than three minutes remaining in the second period, Mannheim's Arkadiusz Dziambor was sent to the box on a tripping call, giving the Swedes their first powerplay of the game. It was two minutes of puck action in the zone, and a duo of one timers, but Frölunda couldn't hit the target.
Mannheim almost opened up the third period with their first goal, after a quick one-timer on Rubin, but it wasn't to be. At 44:31 Mannheim forward Luca Tosto finally got the Germans on the scoreboard off a quick turnover. The score boosted the visitors who appeared to get their second wind.
Frölunda extended their lead to 3-1 with a powerplay goal after Thomas Larkin was called for roughing. Söderblom potted his second of the night, working the puck into an awkward spot before netting what could only be described as an impossible angle goal to pull off. At 55:00 Jan Mursak notched his first of the night, beating the sliding pads of Endras to put the Swedes up 4-1.
With no chance of closing the aggregate gap Mannheim closed out the dying minues of the game shorthanded, and bow out at the Round of 16, while Frölunda set their gaze firmly on the Quarter-Finals.
