- Leksand open up the scoring in the first period
- Tomkins outstanding stopping 41 attempts
- Leksand go down despite outshooting their opponents 44-21
With a three point differential on aggregate, Leksands IF had to put in the hard yards early against hosts Frölunda Gothenburg. That hunger culminated in an intense forecheck in every zone and lots of pucks to the net from the get go.
Their diligence paid off early when blueliner Matt Caito wristed a shot past Frölunda netminder Matthew Tomkins. On review, Finnish forward Mikael Ruohomaa was credited with the tipped goal.
Moments later, Carl Själin ended up in the bin off a high-sticking call, giving Frölunda their first man-advantage of the night, but Axel Brage was rock solid. With six minutes left in the first stanza, Czech forward Michael Špaček picked up a beautiful stretch pass and nearly levelled the score but was denied by Brage's outstretched pads.
Frölunda got their second powerplay chance of the night off another high-sticking penalty, this time by Matt Caito, and it was all the home-side needed. In a quick succession of passes, and with Ryan Lasch waiting off the left post, the puck was hammered into the back of the net, killing any chance of an early Leksand lead.
The second period saw Leksand press hard again, and Tomkins was outstanding foiling a duo of superb efforts by the visiting side. A callous interference penalty by Martin Karlsson, gave the hosts their third man-advantage of the night, and the visitors were lucky to come away unscathed. With tensions escalating, Martin Karlsson and Niklas Lasu exchanged some heated words, which resulted in both players receiving two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.
With a 4-on-4 ensuing, Leksands almost had a net front tip off a rush, but the puck fluttered just wide of the net. A delayed penalty saw one extra blue and white jersey on the ice, and defenceman Patrik Noren picked up his first point of the night, thanks to the combined efforts of Patrik Zackrisson and Carter Camper, making it 2-1.
Frölunda came close to equalising on more than one occasion, including a break-away chance by Lasu, which was tipped wide by Brage's blocker. Leksand had to fend off yet another Frölunda powerplay, this time it was Fredrick Forsberg for holding. Frölunda's Filip Hasa got thrown in the bin for the same penalty minutes later, giving Leksand a chance to cut the differential, but it went terribly wrong after a careless pass was picked off by Max Friberg who deked to backhand and shovelled the equaliser home.
Another golden powerplay chance came Leksand's way, and with 15 seconds on the clock, Brage was pulled for a sixth man in the offensive zone, but Tomkins had all the angles covered, keeping the game to two apiece.
With 20 minutes to close a three point gap, Leksand managed goal number three, this time a one handed pass off the backhand of Karlsson landed on the tape of forward Nils Åman, who snuck it past the blocker of Tomkins. Frölonda responded with a goal, but it was waived off after video review, on account of goaltender intereference.
Zackrisson had a chance point blank, but it went wide off Tomkins. With Brage pulled, and the chances of a comeback dwindling Leksand were unable to bridge the gap. Elmer Söderblom sealed the deal with a third goal, this time on a powerplay to tie the game, and cement his team's path to their sixth Semi-Finals appearance.
