- Frölunda lose their first Semi-Finals series
- Rögle scored 32 seconds in
- Christoffer Rifalk stopped 39 of 40 shots
Frölunda Gothenburg found themselves in an uncomfortably unfamiliar position, dropping their Return Game to challengers Rögle Ängelholm and losing their first Semi-Finals series in their Champions Hockey League tenure by a final of 3-1 and 8-4 on aggregate.
Watching two of the top four teams in the SHL, this match-up between the Swedish powerhouses got off to a quick start for the squad in green and white.
With 32 ticks gone in the first, Rögle, who came into the night’s affair with a two-goal aggregate advantage, added another to edge out the defending Champions 1–0 and 6–3 on aggregate.
Anton Bengtsson received the puck through center ice, skated between the dots and rifled one past Frölunda’s Matthew Tomkins to open the scoring.
Minutes later, the home side was awarded the game’s first powerplay with a chance to close the gap, but Rögle’s PK had no trouble frustrating Frölunda’s chances to tie.
Play continued with the hosts controlling the puck for long stretches but Christoffer Rifalk showed poise in net, denying doorstep chances and second efforts to keep his team’s lead intact.
Frölunda came as close to knotting the game as they could when Michael Špaček clanged one off the pipe four minutes into the second. The play was upheld after review to be sure it didn't cross the line.
Late in the second, Rögle would all but secure their spot in the Final when their first-ranked powerplay added to their aggregate lead as Dennis Everberg tipped a Lucas Ekeståhl Jonsson shot from the point that found its way past a helpless Tomkins.
The hosts began the final frame on the man-advantage but failed to convert for a second time.
They would go on a third powerplay seven minutes in, testing Rögle's PK once more, but again the visitors had little trouble taking care of business at their end of the ice as the clock ticked down on Frölunda's chances.
Still with over ten and half minutes left in the game, Tomkins was pulled in favour of the extra attacker. With a sixth skater in tow, Frölunda applied the pressure and forced Rögle into some disciplinary issues allowing for a fourth powerplay opportunity.
Rögle fans, however, would have nothing to fear as Ludvig Larsson cashed in on the empty net with a short-handed tally to give his side a 3-0 lead and a five-goal on aggregate advantage.
Frölunda would eventually cut into the lead, spoiling Rifalk's shutout, when Filip Johansson netted one on his club's sixth powerplay. Johansson calmly corraled the puck before skating in and wristing one high, securing his team's first of the night.
That would stand as their lone marker though, as Rögle would continue their miraculous run, defeating the defending Champions and securing their place in the Final.
