- Zurich came back from 0-3 down
- Berlin's top players continued to produce
- The Swiss head home with a one-goal aggregate advantage
ZSC Lions Zurich scored four unanswered goals to take a one-goal aggregate advantage over Eisbären Berlin into their Return Game in their Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals series. After trailing by three, the Swiss sank two in the second and two more in the third to earn a 4-3 decision in this highly entertaining battle between the two national champions.
Powerplays were handed out to both sides as the clubs traded chances in a fast-paced opening stanza, but it was the hosts getting things going 13 minutes in when Ty Ronning found Zachary Boychuk all alone at the top of the crease as Boychuk buried it for his second tally of the campaign.
Following the first 20 minutes, Berlin managed to hold on to their lead despite being outshot 13-8 by the Swiss.
The hosts came out with energy in the second as Berlin extended their lead less than two minutes in when pressure in the offensive zone led to Frederik Tiffels skating behind the net before sliding a cross-crease feed to Gabriel Fontaine who slid it backdoor past Šimon Hrubec.
A two-goal lead soon became a three-goal advantage with the Germans making it 3-0 off a clean face-off win. Fontaine registered his second point of the night when he won the draw back to Lean Bergmann who fired it stick-side.
Six minutes later, though, the Swiss reduced the three-goal deficit to two when Derek Grant finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play that involved Zurich's two Top Scorers as Sven Andrighetto dished it to Denis Malgin who slid it back to Grant to get the visitors on the board.
Andrighetto would bring his club to within one goal when he notched his sixth of the tournament on the powerplay at 32:51 of the contest. Mikko Lehtonen took his time with the puck before sliding it to the 31-year-old forward who wired a one-timer from just above the near dot that beat Jonas Stettmer over the right shoulder.
Zurich kept up the pressure in the third as they attempted to secure that all-important tying goal and that effort eventually paid off near the midway mark of the stanza. Juho Lammikko won the face-off and slid it to Dean Kukan who rifled a seeing-eye shot from the point through traffic that found the back of the net, giving the Swiss their third unanswered marker on the night.
The comeback continued for Zurich as they manufactured their fourth tally off a deflection as Lammikko slid the puck towards the net that caught Jesper Frödén while he was falling to the ice.
Berlin were awarded their second powerplay of the game in the dying seconds of the period, but failed to convert as the Germans, who held a three-goal lead for nearly 30 minutes of play, left the contest down by one on aggregate as they prepare for their Return Game in Switzerland.
