- Biel-Bienne outshot Košice 33-15
- The score was 1-1 after 20 minutes
- Košice scored sole goal of the game on the powerplay
EHC Biel-Bienne scored in all three periods as they secured three important points in front of their home crowd against a tougher-than-expected HC Košice.
The game started in the home team’s favour, who put pressure on the Slovak defencemen from the get-go ending in a tripping call for Eduard Šedivý just three minutes into the opening period. Another penalty for the away team came dangerously soon, giving Biel-Bienne a 37-second 5-3 powerplay that surprisingly didn’t deliver the goods.
Luckily for the hosts, it didn’t take long for the first goal of the night to arrive off the stick of Biel’s Gaetan Haas who fired the puck from within the circle at the away team's net to make it 1-0.
Košice took advantage of the powerplay appointed to them after a cross-checking penalty for Biel-Bienne. With an extra man on the ice, they locked down the Swiss team in their defensive zone and caught them out with some quick passing play in front of goaltender Harri Säteri to even the score.
The second period started with a beautiful breakaway goal for Biel-Bienne that originated from an unsuccessful pass between two Košice defencemen - Ian Derungs caught their mistake from within his zome and skated for the Košice goalie completely unmarked. He kept his calm and fired it in on to get the Swiss team back in the lead.
Biel-Bienne remained very active during the third period with plenty of scoring opportunities that somehow didn’t find the back of the net. The pressure on Košice was intense, leading to a holding call at 43:55 and a cross-checking penalty seven minutes later. Unfortunately, the home team didn’t benefit from any of them.
Late into the third period, the away team gained some strength and attempted to turn the game around, but their risky strategy of pulling the goalie didn’t work - an empty-netter was scored by Jere Salinen resulting in a final score of 3-1.
