- Tappara outshot Biel-Bienne 58-48
Switzerland witnessed a fierce battle for a place in the Playoffs between hosts EHC Biel-Bienne and visiting Finns Tappara Tampere. The stakes were sky-high, as the victorious team secured an enviable ticket to the 2023/24 Champions Hockey League playoffs, while the unfortunate one has to rely on favourable results elsewhere around the continent to punch their ticket into the Top 16.
The first period unfolded in favour of the visiting team who secured their first goal at 5:14 just as their powerplay concluded. Nicholas Halloran capitalised on a centering pass, swiftly finding the back of the net to draw first blood. The second goal came late in the period during another powerplay, further extending Tappara's lead in a well-played 2-on-1 opportunity.
Fortunes reversed in the second period as Biel-Bienne notched three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Goal number one, a shorthanded break-out opportunity, was scored by Mike Künzle just two minutes into the period.
Another change on the scoreboard followed soon after. This time, it was during a powerplay situation awarded to Biel-Bienne after a hooking call against the visitors. The home team applied pressure on the defencemen, executing a series of perfect passes that ended with a successful shot straight into the net. The home team surged ahead a minute later during the very same powerplay.
Petteri Puhakka tied the game once again at 33:34, securing his second goal of the night to make it 3-3.
The third period proved to be devastating for Tappara, as they conceded three more goals and struggled unsuccessfully to capitalise on their own opportunities. Biel-Bienne’s fourth goal was scored during four-on-four play, exploiting the extra space on the ice. Shortly after, a shorthanded goal extended the home team's lead to 5-3.
The final goal of the night solidified Biel-Bienne's victory at 6-3, securing them a sure spot in the 2023/24 Playoffs.
