- Färjestad lose first match
- Luke Adam scores twice for Straubing
- Straubing net two powerplay goals
Germany’s Straubing Tigers welcomed Färjestad Karlstad for their second face-off. In their last meeting, the Swedes had the home advantage and gave their fans a 6-1 win.
Top off the opening period, Stephan Daschner got the first penalty call for slashing, giving the away team the chance to score, but Straubing's defense held tight. Mattias Göransson would return the favour, awarding Straubing their first powerplay, followed by a second penalty on Färjestad for having too many men on the ice.
Using their four-on-three advantage, Jason Akeson opened the scoring, giving the home team the lead at the fifteen minute marker. The lead wouldn't hold for long though, as Remi Elie responded with the equaliser two minutes later as the opening period came to a close.
At the start of the second stanza, Marcus Nilsson was sent to the bin for high-sticking. Looking to capitalise on the man advantage, Marcel Brandt took a great shot off the right side, but Färjestad netminder Matthew Tomkins held firm with the stop.
It would be Luke Adam who would gain the lead for Straubing, potting one in at 27:14 with the assist by Jason Akeson.
Straubing Captain Sandro Schönberger showed his leadership skills as he started and ended a brilliant sequence, giving the home team the 3-1 lead.
Before the home fans could finish hearing their captain's goal broadcasted, Joakim Nygård responded by sweeping one past the net for Färjestad.
With tempers flaring, Marcel Brandt and Remi Elie took to grappling, resulting in both getting a five minute roughing penalty and rejected from the remainder of the match.
More penalties followed, as Per Åslund was then sent to the bin on a tripping call, allowing Luke Adam to score his second goal of the game, this one during the man advantage. Straubing wrapped up the feisty second period with a comfortable 4-2 lead.
Off the top of the final period, tempers continued to swell, with Linus Johannsson and Brandon Manning called for roughing.
With a last ditch effort to close the gap, Färjestad pulled their goalie for the offensive advantage, but Straubing captain Sandro Schönberger got a hold of the puck and slammed one in the empty net for the 5-2 lead.
The Straubing Tigers managed to break Färjestad's winning streak with an impressive win at home!
