Joona Ikonen scored in OT to propel Ilves Tampere over Red Bull Salzburg in this tightly contested Finnish-Austrian showdown.
What was a quiet first period for the better part of 19 minutes turned into a 1-goal lead for Salzburg with four ticks remaining in the opening stanza.
Mario Huber and Ali Wukovits found themselves in on a 2-on-1 shorthanded situation with Wukovits electing to shoot. The 26-year-old nailed it five-hole past Jakub Málek to put his team up by one as they headed for the locker room.
Two close calls - one for each side - comprised the highlights of the middle frame, but neither side succeeded in finding twine after 40 as Salzburg maintained their one-goal advantage.
Still chasing the lead heading into the third, the visitors would get a much-needed boost 1:34 in when Jyrki Jokipakka netted his first of the season to even the contest at one aside. Petri Kontiola fed one cross-ice just below the blueline to a wide open Jokipakka who one-timered it by Atte Tolvanen.
With the sides at 4-on-4, the visitors took their first lead of the night near the midway mark of the final frame. Balazs Sebok's shot from a distance had eyes and found its way past Tolvanen to give Ilves their second of the game.
In true dramatic fashion, the home side scored another late period goal to tie things up and send the game to an extra session. Peter Schneider recorded his second assist as this time is was Benjamin Nissner who scored late for Salzburg.
Following the trend of the night, another late goal was served, but this time it was off a visitor's stick. Les Lancaster sauced a perfect outlet pass to Ikonen who skated in on a breakaway and sunk one top shelf to end the game.
A rollercoaster night for the team from Finland ended in their favour as Ilves registered their first-ever CHL win.
