- Greg Mauldin notched his first and second of the tournament
- Salzburg's penalty kill was 7-for-7
- Ali Wukovits scored the shootout winner
Ali Wukovits scored the game-winner in the shootout to send Red Bull Salzburg to their second victory over the Stavanger Oilers with a 3-2 final.
Salzburg silenced the crowd seven minutes into the first when their captain got his first of the year on the powerplay to start things off.
With Patrick Ulriksen called for Boarding, the visitors went on the man-advantage and executed, delivering crisp passing and smart shots to generate rebounds. Near the end of the powerplay, a Peter Schneider one-timer bounced off Henrik Holm's pads and found Thomas Raffl who found the net to make it 1-0.
Trailing by one, Stavanger upped their tempo and managed to draw a pair of penalties. Two excellent chances to tie were squandered, however, as David Kickert's pads answered every shot.
As play resumed in the second, the Austrians' puck luck continued with another shot producing another rebound producing another goal.
Wukovits won the draw, Mario Huber scooped it up and made the initial shot, and Peter Hochkofler was right there to swat it home to increase their lead to two.
Bent but not broken, the Norwegians kept coming and eventually their tenacity would win out when Greg Mauldin made Salzburg pay on an offensive zone turnover to halve the hosts' deficit.
Mauldin made his presence known again eight minutes later when he lasered a one-timer past Kickert to level the score with four and a half to play in period number two. Salzburg's defenders left him wide open in the slot and Andreas Klavestad delivered a perfect feed as the 40-year-old Bostonian did the rest.
Both sides saw plenty of opportunities and powerplay minutes in the third, but both goalies were brick walls and with the game still even after 60, Stavanger and Salzburg would head to the extra session and eventually the shootout to decide the winner.
Three rounds, three shots, and three goals as Salzburg took it in a shootout off tallies from Ali Wukovits, Troy Bourke, and Benjamin Nissner to topple the Norwegians.
