- ONE APIECE AFTER THE FIRST PERIOD, LULEÅ STRIKE FIRST
- SCORELESS SECOND AND THIRD PERIODS SEND THE GAME INTO OT
- ISAC HEDQVIST NETS THE OT WINNER FOR LULEÅ
It was a close final Group Stage game for both clubs, but Luleå Hockey of Sweden got the upper hand over Danish club the Aalborg Pirates.
The Swedes looked to continue their perfect record, courtesy of an early backhander goal from forward Oskar Lundkvist. A solid forecheck by the hosts saw the puck turned over, chipped up high, clearing the blocker of Aalborg netminder Thomas Lillie to secure a 1-0 lead for the hosts.
Not to be outdone, Aalborg responded, equalising at 7:09. Forward Patrick Bjorkstrand turned on the jets to pull a short-handed, backhander goal of his own on Luleå's Matteus Ward. The Danish visitors had a chance to take the lead with a powerplay coming their way, but Ward denied their trio of shots.
With the second stanza underway, and both sides sharing puck possession and special teams time relatively equally, neither side could break the deadlock. The Danes looked to be stronger outshooting Luleå by two to one at one point, and were ahead in terms of face-off wins, but finding the back of the net wasn't coming easy.
The Swedes weren't without opportunities of their own, including four minutes of powerplay action following a duo of penalties late in the period, but the red glove of Lillie covered every stray puck.
Aalborg tried to jumpstart the third period, peppering Ward early, but the Swedish netminder wasn't giving an inch. Luleå caught a break after Aalborg defenceman Ben Carroll was sent to the bin for hooking, but the Danes managed another superb penalty kill, stifling any hopes of a productive powerplay by their hosts.
The closing minutes saw both teams pressuring, looking for an offensive edge. Luleå's Linus Fröberg had one of the best chances of the evening, but his attempt was swallowed up by Lillie who had the angle, sending the game into overtime.
Luleå who had a lackluster third period came alive during OT, dominating puck possession. A shot rifled in from the high slot by youngster Isac Hedqvist was enough to seal the game 2-1 and end a flawless Group Stage run for the Swedes.
