- It was a scoreless first period for both sides
- Zurich outshot their opponents 33-20
- John Murray was an outstanding performer for Katowice
Grzegorz Pasiut was the man that netted the OT winner for Katowice in a huge first win for the Polish debutants who officially secured their status as the "dark horse" of Group D.
GKS Katowice netminder John Murray was tested quickly after the ZSC Lions Zurich secured two minutes of man-advantage play early in the first period. The polish side struggled to clear the zone, but staved off the Swiss attack.
With even-strength play resuming, top-forward Bartosz Fraszko took the chance to test Ludovic Waeber for weak spots but came up empty. Zurich had the lion's share of the early play, peppering Murray, but the netminder dazzled with multiple sprawling saves.
As the play settled into a more even rhythm for the hosts, Katowice had a handful of quality offensive moments. Grzegorz Pasiut had a breakaway which was kicked to the side by Waeber. The dying minute of the period saw some extremely close chances for the Poles, but the period ended scoreless.
With patience on both sides waning, Zurich kicked off the second stanza with pressure. Jérôme Bachofner cut his way onto the doorstep of Murray but was denied. Katowice in turn, sent pucks deep in the zone forcing defensive fatigue on their rivals.
The Swiss side sent in backhanders, one-timers and shots from every angle but couldn't squeeze any open net from the Polish netminder. Zurich forward Dominic Diem finally opened up the scoring at 36:44, with a wristshot finding the back of the net. With less than a minute remaining, Katowice had a chance to equalise twice, but couldn't beat Waeber.
With the second period done and dusted, Katowice needed every minute of offence, but things went awry after the hosts took a penalty for too many men, giving Zurich a rare chance to extend their lead. The Polish side killed off the penalty though, largely due to some superb goaltending by Murray.
Enzo Guebey was sent to the bin with two minor penalties giving Katowice four minutes of powerplay time. Shortly after, the situation got even better for the hosts with the addition of another minor awarded to Zurich. With a 5-on-3 ensuing Fraszko fed the puck through the fivehole of Waeber to tie the game.
A scuffle along the boards saw both sides penalised, and a 4-on-4 resulting. A moment later Katowice took another minor giving Zurich an opening to regain the lead, but Murray was rocksolid, robbing the Swiss side repeatedly.
With the expiration of regular time, overtime was needed to decide the victor, and it went right down to the wire. A wristshot from the high slot from Grzegorz Pasiut would see Katowice successfully secure their first-ever 2-1 CHL victory in OT over Zurich.
