- Frölunda had eight powerplays, scored on one
- Straubing picked up too many penalty minutes
- Two goals for team captain Joel Lundqvist
Frölunda Gothenburg pleased their home crowd with a dominant showing against challengers Straubing Tigers. The Swedes scored three goals in the middle frame and one in the final minutes of the game, ending their first meeting with the DEL side with nearly double the number of shots on goal!
After a hectic first period full off penalty minutes and powerplays for both teams, it took until the second period for the first goal of the game to emerge.
First to get his name on the scoresheet was team captain Joel Lundqvist who redirected the puck into the back of the Straubing net after setting up the chance himself with a quick pass to teammate Patrik Carlsson.
Five minutes later, just at the halfway point of the game, Mats Rosseli-Olsen was able to capitalise on a defensive error from one of Straubing's back two when the puck slid away from one of the players. He picked it up deep in the attacking third and fired a strong shot from the circle to double his team's lead.
The 3-0 goal came at the very end of the second period when an unmarked Joel Lundqvist launched the puck into the away team net on the powerplay from point-blank range.
Straubing upped the pressure when they returned for the final period and even tested their powerplay unit after Ryan Lasch was called for tripping at 48:57, but the Frölunda wall, spearheaded by Lars Johansson in net, just wouldn't crack.
In the final five minutes of the Round of 16 First Game, blue-liner Liam Dower Nilsson scored his first of the season to finalise the score at 4-0 for the home team.
