- Zug produced three goals in the second period
- Ben Smith potted Munich's only marker
- Zug are moving on to their second Quarter-Finals appearance
EV Zug were four goals shy of matching the Champions Hockey League record for an aggregate margin of victory as they showcased a dominant effort against Red Bull Munich with the Swiss securing a comfortable 10-2 win on aggregate to advance to the Quarter-Finals for the second time in three seasons.
49 seconds into the contest, Zug initiated the scoring when Gregory Hofmann found the back of the net after banking the puck off of Mathias Niederberger from behind the net to increase the Swiss' aggregate lead to 6-1.
The Germans began the climb out of their five-goal hole 12 minutes later with Ben Smith putting home an errant puck after three Munich players surrounded the Swiss crease to close the aggregate gap to four. Munich crashed the net as the puck pinballed around giving Smith the opportunity to put it past Leonardo Genoni and get the visitors on the board.
The Swiss notched their second goal at 23:50 when a bad giveaway gave way to a good finish from Dario Allenspach to regain a five-goal aggregate lead. The forward took possession of the puck after a Munich defender coughed it up before sliding it between the pads of Niederberger for his first of the season.
The hosts lit the lamp for a third time courtesy of Fabrice Herzog's incredible individual effort. The Swiss forward powered his way into the offensive zone before wristing it near side behind the blocker to increase his team's advantage.
Near the midway mark of the middle frame, the Swiss went on an extended man-advantage where some smart passing led to a point shot from Samuel Kreis which whizzed past Niederberger and into the back of the net.
Zug matched their 5-1 score from last week on their fifth powerplay when Yannick Zehnder pounced on the puck down low at 46:02 of the third to further cushion the Swiss' lead. This would prove to be the only tally of the period and the home side would continue on in their CHL season as Munich, who reached the Semi-Finals last season, fell short of matching their success from a year ago.
