Lino Martschini (#46) of EV Zug was involved in an incident deemed as Kicking (IIHF Rule 151) at 36:08 of Zug's Round of 16 First Leg game against Tappara Tampere.
The video evidence has determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1A – ‘Careless', the result of insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error. According to the Arbitrator, and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the CHL PSC, player Lino Martschini (#46) of EV Zug will receive supplementary discipline under Kicking-IIHF Rule 151.
Tuesday night in Tappara Tampere, EV Zug forward #46 Lino Martschini used an illegal action, deemed as kicking on Tappara Tampere defenceman #19 Ben Blood. As the video shows, Martschini had puck possession and was driving the net. Blood makes a legal body check on Martschini, knocking him to his knees on the ice. As Martschini is knocked to the ice and attempts to get up, Blood gave Martschini an extra push, which created an action where Martschini is on his back, with the stick of Blood directly underneath him. Blood, due to holding on to his stick, lowered his head and body in a bent over position. Martschini, while on his back, raised his left skate to an exceptionally high distance, contacting the head area of Blood.
This is considered kicking. This is not considered to be excusable contact. He raised his leg, either as a reactionary or protective manner and it is not considered accidental. It was also taken into consideration Martschini did not raise his skate maliciously or in a forceful manner. However; a player is deemed responsible for his actions, either accidental or intentional.
Considering Martschini's skate contacted Blood in the head area, and that this was considered to be an avoidable action, Martschini will receive supplementary discipline. The CHL Sports Board fines Lino Martschini (#46) of EV Zug 600.00 Euros, effective immediately.
In addition, Lino Martschini will be considered a repeat offender in the event supplementary discipline is required within the CHL.
Key Points:
- 1: Kicking
- 2: Contact to head area
- 3: Category 1A – Careless – fine only (no game suspension)
- 4: Not a repeat offender
