There have been some brilliant performances through the opening stage of this year’s Champions Hockey League, with players impressing across all teams. But only a select few can earn the right to be named on the Team of the Regular Season.
Here's our pick of the ultimate six player line-up:
GK - Tyler Beskorowany
Of all the netminders who suited up for the Regular Season of the 2023/24 Champions Hockey League season, the Belfast Giants' Tyler Beskorowany proved a versatile, dependable and razor-sharp goalie who could win games with his steadfast performances between the posts.
The 2023/24 campaign was the backstop’s second in the CHL and this one saw a vast improvement in the netminder’s play. In his first iteration with HC05 Banská Bystrica during the 2019/20 season, Beskorowany was lit up for 19 goals against over five games played and finished that year with a 1-4 record and a 90.1 SV% coupled with a 3.68 GAA.
This year, the 33-year-old mustered a very solid 93.02 SV% given his team's position against a crop of six established teams from the continent and with 2.01 GAA and only 12 goals allowed over 358 minutes (not to mention not one but TWO shutouts in front of a packed SSE Arena), he's rightfully earned a spot on our Team of the Regular Season.
D - Sami Vatanen
When we looked for a speedy, versatile D-man who could play at both ends of the ice, we looked no further than former NHLer Sami Vatanen, whose season with Genève-Servette proved why he's seen as one of the best blueliners in Europe currently.
The 32-year-old defenceman who accrued 200 points during his career in the NHL is showcasing that same scoring prowess with seven points (1G, 6A) in six games, displaying there's so much more to his play than just guarding the net.
Finding teammates hasn't been a problem for Vatanen whose six helpers tie him for fourth-most in the CHL while his 24:04 TOI average per game is ranked as one of the highest after the Regular Season. He’s also showing a willingness to fire the puck on net as he’s produced the fifth-most shots on goal with 23.
The 179cm, 84kg blueliner isn’t afraid to block shots either as he’s among the league leaders in that department with 11. Like a perfect Swiss knife!
D - Les Lancaster
Ilves Tampere's Alternate Captain is a born leader and has shown a propensity for finding the scoresheet with five goals and two assists through five games. Lancaster’s five tucks have him tied with the very best forwards, while he of course leads all defencemen in that category.
His sophomore CHL season has been every bit better than his first time around as the 28-year-old has nearly tripled his point total from a year before. He’s also showing excellent poise on the powerplay where the American has netted three tallies and has demonstrated his ability to come through in the clutch with a pair of game-winning goals.
Even when the puck isn't on his stick, Lancaster doesn’t disappoint as evidenced by his plus/minus +5 rating and his 1.40 points per game that has him tied for 14th among all skaters.
Combined with Vatanen's amazing TOI numbers and assists, this defensive duo could have the world at its feet!
FW - Libor Hudáček
Oceláři Třinec forward Libor Hudáček ended the Regular Season as the CHL's Top Scorer with four goals and six assists for a grand total of 10 points in six games. The 33-year-old was a huge part of Třinec's bid to make the Playoffs and when we saw his huge three-point effort on the final Game Day, we just knew we had to have him on our six-man roster for the Team of the Regular Season.
The Slovak national combines experience from the SHL, NL, KHL and the Slovak and Czech Extraligas and is especially dangerous with his accurate shooting and dead-perfect position play. He's also no stranger to strong physical play and isn't afraid to make space where he sees fit.
A player like Hudáček combines so much - experience, confidence, ability - and those are things you just need to succeed.
FW - Aatu Jämsen
21-year-old Aatu Jämsen is a bit of a left-field choice but let us explain. The Lahti Pelicans forward may have scored only seven points, but with just four games played this rising star has really shown Europe what he's all about - especially when looking back at Game Day 2.
Jämsen, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, scored a massive four points (1G+3A) against the Rouen Dragons to help the Pelicans control this crazy game that saw eight goals in the first period alone.
The Lahti Pelicans academy graduate has averaged nearly two points per game in the CHL and is hovering around the magical point/game mark in the Liiga - these stats are both on par with CHL superstar and teammate Ryan Lasch.
Being compared to the greats at such a young age proves that this kid is going places!
FW - Pär Lindholm
32-year-old Skellefteå AIK forward Pär Lindholm rounds out this all-star Team of the Regular Season as the perfect two-way player who contributes on both ends of the ice and brings even more NHL, KHL and, most importantly, CHL experience (2023/24 is his fifth season in Europe's biggest club ice hockey competition).
With powerplay goals, game-winners, hits and a very solid +/- of +5, Lindholm has a lot to offer. He's also a lefty which sits well within our diverse group.
