Head Coach Tom Pokel of the Straubing Tigers was involved in an incident deemed as Unsportsmanlike Conduct during a post-game interview. Video evidence was examined by the CHL Sports Disciplinary Board, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline.
Having considered the video evidence and in consultation with the perspective of the CHL Sports Disciplinary Board, Tom Pokel insult against Game Officials, not conducive to the CHL Brand in post-game interview. Considering the question asked in the post-game interview was in a general reference, asking the opinion of the game, not the opinion of the game officiating. The answer was of minimal content in reference to the general dynamics of the game and instead contained specific opinions directed at the officials of the game.
Players, Coaches, and team personnel are responsible for their conduct at all times and endeavor to prevent disorderly conduct before, during and in this case, post-game.
The CHL prides itself on players’ speed and skill and the game is about the product, not about personal opinions of unsubstantiated content immediately after a game. The CHL also has an expectation of Coaches to lead by example. For this reason, the CHL has many options for a team or coach to discuss issues that an individual may feel directly with the CHL, and the media is not an option.
The CHL Sports Board suspends Tom Pokel for 1 game (on probation) and issues a fine of EUR 500.00 (effective immediately).
* The 1 CHL game suspension is subject to probation and is to be served only if/when a future incident occurs during the 2022/23 CHL Season and will be considered in addition to the respective incident in question.
