SønderjyskE Vojens will return to the Champions Hockey League for the first time since 2015/16 after winning the 2020 IIHF Continental Cup!
The Danish side secured the trophy in their final game thanks to a 3-1 win against Poland's Comarch Cracovia, putting them into an unassailable position at the top of the four-team group. SønderjyskE beat Nottingham on penalty shots on Friday night, before beating Neman Grodno in overtime on Saturday to set up the chance of lifting the trophy on Sunday afternoon.
Back in 2014, the team from Vojens lost out to IFK Helsinki in a shootout to get their first CHL points before winning 4-3 in Krefeld. In 2015/16 they beat Red Bull Salzburg 4-1 at home before narrowly losing out to HV71.
"I congratulate SønderjyskE Vojens on their extraordinary performance in order to win the IIHF Continental Cup as the first Danish team," said CHL CEO Martin Baumann. "I'm excited to welcome back their team and organisation to the Champions Hockey League - and of course their fanbase too."
Denmark's Metal Ligaen now receives an additional place in the 2020/21 Champions Hockey League. If SønderjyskE win the Danish national championship then the additional CHL place for Denmark will be awarded to the Regular Season Winners, or Runners-Up in case SønderjyskE also win the Regular Season.
