We spoke to representatives of our four NL participants from Switzerland following the CHL Draw in Prague, Czechia, to find out what their goals were for the upcoming season, what they thought about their six Regular Season opponents and who they were most looking forward to playing.
"It's good to discover new places, develop contacts and discover new clubs."Gerd Zenhäusern, Fribourg-Gottéron
First to speak was Marc Gautschi of Genève-Servette, the reigning CHL Champions. "We had a really good experience last season," he said, "it was a great journey and we met a lot of interesting people. With the team we have, we can beat every team in the CHL. We always want to win."
Sven Leuenberger of ZSC Lions Zurich said that they "at least want to make the Playoffs" and that the Swiss champions of 2023/24 will go on from there.
"Everybody wants to be in the top 16 to make the Playoffs, our goal is to start well early in the season," was Gerd Zenhäusern of Fribourg-Gottéron's response when asked about his club's goal for the upcoming season.
John Fust of Lausanne HC revealed that his side will "do they best they can" throughout the Regular Season and "try and reach the next round".
What did the Swiss representatives think of their draw?
Gautschi thinks Genève have a "fun draw", saying. "It's a varying mix but we're looking forward to getting out on the road and hosting the other teams in Switzerland."
Leuenberger's first thoughts drifted to travel, but sports-wise, he said the traditional Swiss team will have some tough teams to play against: "Ilves and Salzburg look like two really tough teams to play against, but it's always exciting to play in the Champions Hockey League!"
Zenhäusern said that Fribourg are preparing for a North American and physical style of play from their opponents, adding: "In the last couple of years, we've faced a lot of Swedish and Finnish teams so it's going to be a good challenge for us this year!"
Lausanne's Fust said that his team has a "competitive" draw. "Třinec at home is going to be a difficult team to play here in Lausanne," he added.
And finally, which clubs stood out most to the representatives following the CHL Draw? Gautschi said Genève are excited for all of their opponents but some might stand out for some of their Finnish players: "The Finns on our team will definitely be excited to play against Ilves."
Zurich's Leuenberger said his side know most of their opponents already, but that the fans will definitely enjoy travelling to Storhamar.
Zenhäusern of Fribourg is also looking forward to going to Norway: "I think it's going to be an interesting trip for us. It's good to discover new places, develop contacts and discover new clubs."
Lausanne's Lust ended with high praise for 2022/23 CHL Champions and Finnish powerhouse club Tappara Tampere: "We're really looking forward to going up to Tappara to face one of the best teams in Europe."
