This matchup of the Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals pits two Swedish teams against each other as Skellefteå AIK prepare to face familiar foes Frölunda Gothenburg - here's all you need to know!
- Both teams enter the QFs having only lost a single game so far this season
- Skellefteå's fourth QF appearance, sixth for Frölunda
- Teams familiar with each other from SHL
Skellefteå, who boast one of the most effective powerplay units of the season, have been a very strong team in the CHL this year. The three-time Quarter-Finalists have now made the second Playoff round for the fourth time after dispatching ZSC Lions Zurich home and away in the Round of 16.
Their 5-4 win at home in the First Game was a back-and-forth struggle that both teams could have won, but, in large part thanks to Joakim Lindström who ended the night on 2G + 2A, it was the Swedes who took a one-goal lead into the Return Game where they beat their Swiss counterparts 4-1.
Despite the one-sided scoreline of the second meeting, the Swedes were second-best throughout most of the game, recording only half the amount of shots on goal than Zurich and stealing the game with only a 38% Expected Win.
Three of Skellefteå's four goals came on the powerplay - which is a common theme for them this season, three of their five games in the Round of 16 First Game were also scored with an extra attacker on the ice!
Their powerplay unit has been operating at a table-topping 34.29%, proving how important scoring on the powerplay is for their game.
Leading the team in goals scored is Rickard Hugg who's found twine seven times, second is Filip Sandberg who's scored one less.
Three players are on 10+ points - Hugg (7G, 4A), Sandberg (6G, 4A) and Max Lindholm (2G, 9A) and glancing at the stats of their defencemen reveals that they also like to get in on the action - apart from a few late roster add-ons, all have at least one point.
Skellefteå and Frölunda know each other from their domestic league and that could play a huge factor in how they prepare for the game, but that could go both ways and everyone knows there's no tougher opponent in the CHL than four-time CHL Champions Frölunda, a lesson many a team have learnt the hard way over the years.
Frölunda Gothenburg, just hearing the name brings chills.
The Swedish powerhouse club are without doubt one of the biggest names of the CHL and top most of the CHL all-time statistics charts. They are the most successful team to ever grace the pan-European competition, having lifted the coveted European Trophy four times while making it all the way to the Final five times. They are also yet to miss a season of the competition since 2014/15, proving just how consistent their performances have been both domestically and on Europe's elite club ice hockey stage.
Frölunda enter the 2022/23 Quarter-Finals in usual form - on top. They've scored the most goals over the eight games played so far this season (41, which is over five a game), have some of the highest-scoring players among their ranks and also have one of the best penalty kills CHL-wide (currently rated at nearly 93%).
They had no issue moving past the Straubing Tigers in the Round of 16, beating the DEL side 4-0 in the First Game and 3-2 the following week.
Ryan Lasch leads the team, and the entire CHL for that matter, with 19 points (6G, 13A) in eight games while three other players are on over a point per game - Max Friberg (4G, 6A), Jere Innala (5G, 4A) and Nicklas Lasu (2G, 6A).
22-year-old Filip Johansson, who is on loan to Frölunda from the Vancouver Cannucks for who he signed this year, and 21-year-old Pontus Johansson are the stand-out defencemen on the team, both having scored seven points in the CHL this year.
What do Frölunda need to do to move past Skellefteå? Keep up the scoring, but most importantly, keep up the penalty kill because that could really hinder their opponent's game.
