HC Ambrì-Piotta’s playoff push came to an end on Tuesday night, following their elimination at the hands of EHC Biel-Bienne. One piece of news that may ease the disappointment of the loyal fans of the “Biancoblù” is that due to results in the other National League Quarter-Finals, Ambrì-Piotta have been confirmed as the fifth qualifier from Switzerland for the 2019/20 Champions Hockey League.
Following the changes to the CHL qualification criteria, Switzerland was awarded five places for the 2019/20 season, comprising the top four finishers and the eventual playoff champions. The four remaining Swiss Semi-Finalists, and therefore the future playoff champions, have already qualified for the upcoming CHL season.
Consequently, owing to their fifth-place finish in the National League regular season, Ambrì-Piotta have achieved CHL qualification and will make their tournament debut in 2019/20. They will be the third Swiss newcomer to the Champions Hockey League for the upcoming season alongside Lausanne HC and EHC Biel-Bienne.
