Frölunda Gothenburg came back strong on home ice after losing the First Game of their Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals series against SHL rivals Skellefteå AIK to make it to the Semi-Finals of the pan-European competition for a record seventh time.
The four-time CHL Champions entered the game one goal down on aggregate, which was a score they leveled in the second period after a scoreless opening 20 minutes.
However, an Andreas Wingerli goal for Skellefteå on the powerplay would tip the aggregate score 1-2 in favour of the team in black and yellow.
Frölunda would level the series for a second time before the end of the second period - this time Jacob Nilsson firing the puck in on the powerplay, the game's third goal scored on the man advantage, but another Skellefteå goal at the very beginning of the final frame saw them trailing again.
At 48:20, Filip Johansson scored the series-equaliser that would ultimately send the game to OT and to a shootout where CHL veteran Ryan Lasch would score the game-winner.
"It's a good feeling right now"Frölunda Gothenburg's Ryan Lasch
"It was really nice to get this win," started Ryan Lasch after the game, "I think we played a solid game from the get-go tonight."
"We didn't want to give up anything at the end, and in the shootout, we came out on top."
What was the difference in a game as close as this? "I think we were patient," thinks the CHL's all-time Top Scorer, "we knew we had chances and that it would be just a matter of time before we scored."
For Lasch, it was another milestone night in the CHL, as the 35-year-old American picked up his 90th assist and 40th goal.
"I've been playing well here, our line has been creating a lot of chances," he said.
Frölunda will face another Swedish team in the CHL Semi-Finals - Luleå Hockey.
"Both Luleå and Skellefteå are top quality teams, so we kind of expected it," said Lasch, "it's going to be exciting!"
"We are going to have some time off but it will be a tough challenge - there's still lots of work to do," he concluded.
