Unia Oświęcim were founded in 1946 as multi-sport organisation and created an ice hockey section in 1957 under the initiative of footballer and ice hockey player Józef Korczyk. After spending some time playing in the Krakov district and lower levels of Polish hockey, the club were promoted to the second league in the mid-1960s and made the top league for the first time in 1970.
A turbulent period of 1970-1991 saw the club hover between the first and second league, but in the 1989-1991 period the club went from finishing as one of the worst teams in the first league to securing a silver medal the following season.
In 1992, Unia Oświęcim won their very first Polish championship and had great success in the European Cup competition where they beat teams from Sweden, Switzerland, France, Ukraine, Lithuania and Latvia to finish in 5-6th place in the final classification. This result is the best result of a Polish club in European competitions to this day.
Between 1998 and 2004, Oświęcim won the Polish championship seven times in a row, meaning their 2023/24 title comes 20 years after their last success and has also granted them their very first qualification for the Champions Hockey League.
Oświęcim are the 5th Polish team to qualify for the Champions Hockey League and 102nd team overall to play in Europe's biggest club ice hockey competition.
