Though officially founded in 1977, the recent history of hockey in Salzburg began in 2000 when Red Bull took over as the title sponsor.
Red Bull Salzburg have made a name for themselves in recent years with success both nationally and internationally. They are currently one of the top ice hockey clubs in Austria. The Red Bull Hockey Model is an international training program which owes its success to modern, attacking styles of hockey and cooperation between partner clubs from across Europe.
After finishing seventh in their debut season in Austria’s top tier of hockey in 2004/05, Salzburg were crowned national champions for the first time in 2006/07. Success continued in the following years and the team from the Alps have won eight more ICE Hockey League championships since, most recently in 2023/24. They have a strong fan base and are always a top side in the ICE.
On the international stage, Salzburg have won the IIHF Continental Cup, the European Trophy in 2011/12 and the Red Bulls Salute twice.
They have participated in the Champions Hockey League eight times and made it as far as the Semi-Finals (2018/19). They've qualified for the Playoffs in each season bar 2023/24.
