The Lahti Pelicans are a Finnish club located in Lahti, southern Finland. Even though they were only founded in 1996, hockey in Lahti (as in all of Finland) dates all the way back to the end of the 19th century. The club used to play in Vyborg, a city located in today’s Russia over 200km away, but due to World War 2, they were forced to move to Lahti where they’ve stayed ever since.
They’ve played predominantly in the second tier of Finnish hockey throughout their history and struggled with financial difficulty in 1992. This led to the club being renamed the Lahti Pelicans and being completely rebranded and restructured in 1996. A few years later they were promoted from the second league to the Liiga – the top tier of Finish hockey where they have remained ever since.
Following a third-place finish in the Liiga regular season in 2018/19 under head coach Ville Niemine, the club qualified for their first-ever season of the Champions Hockey League.
They made their debut in 2019/20, finishing the season in the Group Stage with a 2-4 record, and returned again in the 2023/24 season where they made it out of the Regular Season but were eliminated by Czech club Vítkovice Ridera in the Round of 16.
2024/25 will be their third participation in Europe's biggest club ice hockey competition.
