Slovenia are to be represented in the Champions Hockey League for the first time in 2022/23, and the honour of being their first-ever representative goes to Olimpija Ljubljana.
Referred to almost exclusively as 'Olimpija' in Slovene, the club was founded in 1928 as SK Ilirija and competed in the Yugoslav Hockey League from 1937 until 1991, before joining the new Slovenian Championship thereafter. The club, which won 13 Yugoslav titles and has 15 Slovene championships to date, was known under several names before taking on the name HK Ljubljana in 1949, and then becoming HK Olimpija in 1962.
In 2007, HDD Olimpija were accepted into the then Erste Bank Eishockey Liga and made an immediate impact under American coach Mike Posma, going all the way to the finals before being beaten by Red Bull Salzburg 4-2 in the final series. Žiga Pance, who is one of the team's most experienced players, was part of that original team. Olimpija would however only make two further trips to the EBEL playoffs as the team's fortunes slowly worsened, culminating with them leaving the league at the end of the 2016/17 season.
HK Olimpija, which since 2004 had served as the farm team for HDD Olimpija, was then reformed and joined the Alps Hockey League in 2017, reaching the Quarter-Final. A season later they won the championship title, and would also repeat the feat in 2021 before the club returned to the now ICE HL in the summer of 2021.
Slovene Head Coach Mitja Sivič, a former Olimpija player, led the team to an extremely successful debut season in their new surroundings. Olimpija started well and led the league for several weeks before eventually losing ground towards the end of the season and finishing sixth. They were eliminated from the playoffs by Villach in the quarter-finals in game seven.
Olimpija play their home games at the 4,500-capacity Hala Tivoli in Ljubljana, which hosted the 2022 IIHF World Ice Hockey Division 1A Championships in May. Originally built in 1963, the arena underwent major refurbishments in 2004 and is located a short walk from the centre of Slovenia's capital city.
