The history of ice hockey in Košice dates back to 1921. The current club was founded in 1962 and two years later the team advanced to the top Czechoslovakian league in ice hockey. In their 50-year history in the top Czechoslovakian and subsequent Slovakian leagues, HC Košice have never been relegated.
Since the establishment of the Slovak Republic in 1993, the Košice team has made the playoff semi-finals 23 times and the final 16 times, including a spell of six in a row between 1993-1999 and eight in a row between 2007-2015.
The club have won a total of nine Slovakian national championships and two Czechoslovakian titles. As the only Slovak club, HC Košice succeeded in winning three consecutive championship titles in a row between 2009 and 2011.
The club have seen a number of great players wear the Košice jersey, such as Ladislav Troják, who was the first Slovak world champion and was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame, Igor Liba, Vincent Lukáč, Jiří Holeček, Peter Bondra, Jiří Bicek, Ladislav Nagy, Marek Svatoš, Rastislav Staňa, to name a few.
The Slovak club won the Continental Cup in 1998 and featured in the Champions Hockey League three times between 2014-2017, qualifying for the Playoffs in two of those seasons.
Following a championship season in the Slovak Extraliga in 2022/23, HC Košice are back in the elite European club ice hockey competition after six seasons out
