HC Innsbruck were founded in 1994 as the successor to Innsbrucker EV, a club that have history dating back to the 1920s. They are based in Innsbruck, the capital city of the mountain region of Tyrol, Austria.
The club have played in Austria's top tier since the 2000/01 season but left the EBEL, now the ICE Hockey League, for Austria's second tier in 2009 due to financial difficulties. They returned three years later after winning the second division championship and have continued to play in Austria's highest league since 2012/13.
They play their home games in the Tiroler Wasserkraft Arena Innsbruck which was opened in 2005 and has a capacity for over 3,500 spectators.
The club colours are black and dark blue and the team's mascot is a shark that is also depicted in their club logo.
In their nearly 30-year history, HC Innsbruck have never won the domestic championship but have made it to the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the ICE HL playoffs.
A third-place finish in the regular season of the ICE HL secured the club their very first appearance in the Champions Hockey League.
