GKS Katowice were founded in 1949 and have won seven Polish championships since then.
They are a well-supported team in Poland. Their home town, Katowice, is located in mid-southern Poland and has a population of over 290 000.
Their first title came in 1958, followed by five more between 1960 and 1970. Their most recent title came in 2021/22, 50 years since their last, when they beat Unia Oświęcim four times in a row during the playoffs finals series.
Spodek (meaning "saucer" in Polish) is the name of their home arena. The UFO-shaped arena was for many years the largest of its type in Poland with a capacity of over 11,000 and was expanded and renovated between 2009-2011.
