The Espoo Blues were established in February 1984 as Kiekko-Espoo and played their first season in 1984–85 in the Finnish 2nd Division. In 1992 the club was promoted to Liiga. Current assistant coach Tero Lehterä scored the winning goal with an assist from three-time NHL Selke Award winner Jere Lehtinen. In 1998, the club was renamed "Blues" from the dominant colour of the home jersey. In the 1998-99 season the Blues moved to their current home, Barona Areena. In 2007–08, the Blues set a new team record by winning 12 games in a row. They finished the regular season in second place and ensured their first medal ever. In 2010–11, the Blues made history by becoming the first team in Liiga to advance from a wild-card spot to the semi-finals. The Blues were awarded the silver medal for the second time. In 2011–12 the club again made history in the playoffs, becoming the first team in Liiga history to win the series after being down 0–3.
