The Aalborg Pirates trace their roots back to 1967 when a club called AaB Ice Hockey was founded in Aalborg.
The club has changed names and been merged with smaller local clubs many times throughout its 55-year history. AaB, later Aalborg IK Panthers, regularly participated in Denmark's top flight up to 2012, when the club found itself in financial difficulty which it was unable to turn around.
Their biggest restructuring took place in 2012, when the organisation was sold to a group of investors who were determined to turn Aalborg's financial fortunes around and take them to the pinnacle of Danish ice hockey by 2018.
Their plan, which included a complete reorganisation, worked, as between 2014 and 2018, the Pirates made it to the Metal Ligaen playoff quarter-finals four times in a row.
In 2018, they made it all the way to the final and won their first-ever Danish championship, resulting in their first-ever qualification for the Champions Hockey League.
Despite finishing their debut season on Europe's biggest stage last in Group A, they picked up their first international win against the Vienna Capitals on Game Day 2.
The Aalborg Pirates were crowned Metal Ligaen champions for a second time in 2022 and made their comeback to the Champions Hockey League in 2022/23 which they marked with a memorable Game Day 1 win over Czech club Sparta Prague. They finished the season in third place in Group A.
